As the focus shifts from high input, housed flocks to more sustainable grass fed sheep, there is increasing need for efficiency in order to ensure sustainability and profitability. Pasture based systems are more economical and the demand for grass fed/grass finished meat is on the rise in the US. This, combined with a rise in first and second generation homesteaders building small flocks for better food security, has placed pressure on shepherds to select for grass-fed genetics that thrive in grazing based systems and can finish all lambs on grass as the sole diet.

The challenge is that large portions of the US are identified as mineral deficient in at least one trace element commonly responsible for nutritional problems that affect growth, milk production or fertility. It becomes difficult to achieve peak performance without supplementation of Selenium, Cobalt, Zinc, Copper or Iodine. The existence of mineral deficiencies, and the correlation with lower performance, has been well documented as well as the effects of reversing these symptoms when proper mineral supplementation is provided.

Traditionally mineral supplementation has been done using feed additives, or free access loose minerals. In a grass fed system, feed additives are not an option, and intake of loose minerals are subject to individual sheep intake; without the ability to track. A long acting, slow release, multi-trace element bolus insures common mineral deficiencies are avoided, while saving in labor without the need for mineral drenching, or requiring the administration of more than one bolus.

At Sheepbolus.com we feel the Mayo 5-1 is the best ‘cheap insurance’ you can provide for a grass fed flock. The 6 month cover, of slow release minerals, gives you peace of mind when your flock is pasture based. It’s a great value, in regard to ensuring mineral health.
