Boluses have been used for ruminants since the 1950s. Initial efforts were on improving cobalt deficiencies with “therapeutic pellets". The idea of using a bolus for the slow release of minerals in the rumen was formally developed and patented in the 1970s. Since then a compressed, multi-trace mineral element bolus, that can succinctly deliver five key minerals (selenium, cobalt, iodine, zinc, copper) in a slow release format that saves on labor & discomfort of the animal- with only a single bolus needed every 6 months. Boluses are common in Europe & Australia & the US dairy cow industry is aware of the benefits, but mineral boluses for sheep & goats have not garnered the attention they deserve.
